Now I get what you are saying Steve! - I was talking about something else.

To your point, from what you said you "...leave the page URL blank..." when you copy - How about you don't.

That's what I did. Instead of leaving blank I set the URL I wanted without dashes and spaces. It still creates a record under the TabURLs table, but this time with a 200 code (normal)

That is the best I can recommend.

Best regards,

Aderson

Yes, sorry Aderson, I obviously didn't explain myself very well before.

I tried adding the URL when the page is created, but that entry is ignored and the URL with hyphens appears instead. But I will have a look at the taburls table to see what's there in this case. I assume I can edit the URL in the table to get the desired one, perhaps this is what you meant all along?
I did notice some of the entries were 200 and some 301.

I assume I should do the following:
1) Ensure there's only one entry in the table for a given page
2) Edit the URL to whatever is required.
3) Ensure the Httpstatus is set to 200.
4) Ensure that the 'seqnum' to 0.

Does that sound reasonable?

Thanks for your help on this, it's great to finally get to the bottom of it.

Best Regards,

Steve

I think you have a sound plan listed Steve!

Hi Aderson,

OK that's good, I will do that in future then, thank you for putting me on to the plan :-)

I assume this is something that's been overlooked in DNN 8, we shouldn't have to go editing the TabUrls table.
I don't understand why it creates multiple entries in the first place nor why multiple redirects become 'visible' to the browser.
In fact, nor do I understand why a redirect is necessary in the first place. It's a mystery to me.

But the main thing is to be aware of the potential issue and to have a workaround, which I now do.

Thank you once again.

Steve

Hi Steve,

The reason for the 301 redirect after renaming a page is to ensure that old links that might be pointing to the old URL will redirect to the new URL. That is the case of static links from other sites or dynamic search results.

The 301 redirect informs search engines of the new page location and that the "google juice" should be transferred to the new location.

In your case it just happens that you had just created the new page and you don't really care about all of that as this is not page that was sitting there for a while and there are no links to it nor it has been indexed by search engines yet.

Cheers,

Aderson
