Hi Charlie,
It is just taking a long time for the deleting to be done and the connection to the database has timed out apparently.
As a suggestion you may want to Truncate Event Log and Site Log and Shrink database / log files in simple recovery mode.
You may want to try using the scripts from this video:
DNN Database Clean Up.
