Hi guys,

Aderson you may know me a little.  I have been a member of your site for a couple of years now and I love it.  Up until now I have mainly been building websites for people using DNN.  I know HTML, CSS and a little Javascript.  I want to get get more serious about becoming a developer on the .NET platform and being able to enhance my client's websites.  My ultimate goal is I would like to venture into DNN module development.  I really don't know much about .NET itself.  If you were a newbie like me, where would you focus your training and how would you prioritize it?  In other words, what languages, platforms, etc and in what order.  Nothing like a small question for the day eh?

Hi Hutch,

Yes you are here from the beginning. I will do what I can to get you going in terms of module development.

You said you don't know much about .NET itself. Let me step back for a second an ask a question: Have you ever program on any language?

I ask that because if you haven't, then you would need to create some sort of foundation first. Our videos here assume in a way that you know how to program and we then show how to adjust to module development.

If you have developed before, then the sequence is simple:

1 - Learn how to setup your environment to develop DNN modules;

2 - Learn the basics on DNN module development - follow the sequence;

3 - The we have some advanced techniques on DNN module development as well;

Cheers,

Aderson

Gerald,

I wrote a Blog post in January that lays out a 6 course progression for module developers:

Thanks very much Aderson.  Years and years ago I wrote code in a language called RPGII for IBM AS400 mainframes.  (I said it was a long time ago!)  Other than HTML and CSS I have not done any programming.   I guess that is what I am asking.  What Programming languages would be most advantages to learn that would help me in the DNN Environment .  That foundation you speak of is what I am asking about.

Thanks Scott.  I have started to make my way through that.  I guess my question was more about your advice on what programming language(s) if any would be most helpful to know if I wanted to work primarily with the DNN platform.  Is it really necessary to know C# to be a DNN developer?  How extensive does my .NET knowledge need to be?  That sort of thing.

Hutch
